Augmented Reality(AR) Navigation In Airport

Airport navigation application to guide passenger on-the-go for easier, faster access to information about their flight, directions, terminals, shopping and meet/greet fellow passengers.

OVERVIEW

Navigation around the airport need to easily accessible to travelers to empower user with faster access to information about flight status, check in information, departing gate information, security check, direction to essential services like food court, pre-order food, drinking water, rest room, charging point, shopping area, duty free area, meet and greet passengers, etc in the airport.

An improved user flow would greatly benefit customers future experience with airport and its services. This is critical especially when in need quick bite/shopping/navigation in hours prior to departure of a flight. Helping user with navigation in airport considering fastest route is essential.

SCENARIO

Navigating from place to place is a daily activity for everyone. Humans tend to always look out for signs while guiding to reach the destination. It’s definitely a good problem to explore.

Consider reaching at an airport for the first time (or repeated visit). Every airport in the world is different from each other. It’s makes a bit difficult to keep track. While directions to various terminal gates and other ground sections usually are marked, there’s a wide array of information to absorb while hustling through different people from different cultures and lands and carts while dragging your luggage. These elements mean a significant amount of information. How to appropriately combine this information to the real world is a tremendous challenge to solve.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

• Create an "WOW" experience for passenger travelling to the airport first time or revisiting airport.

• Interacting with virtual objects in realtime while maintaining key requirement important to user for catching flight on time and having great overall experience.

• Viewing your directions on a 2D map or in 3D AR

• Creating user-friendly portable devices like mobile, iPAD, etc

Top 3 GOALS

1) Customer satisfaction

2) Simple but rich airport experience (localized specific to each airport)

3) Navigating to a series of destinations, calculating the fastest route

DISCOVER

My User experience strategy is a shared holistic vision for what a product or service will be from the end user’s perspective. I like to evaluate ideas to determine what meets both user and business goals most effectively. I believe that defining a user experience strategy up front is critical to making sure that all design decisions map back to a vision that is supported by research and that has defined success criteria.

QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITIVE RESEARCH

This research from travelers, family, friends, colleagues can be very useful to know about the traveler’s habits and know the pain point they facing while navigating airport. By knowing the problem, we can get the better solution.

Following sample questions can be asked during interview and survey:

5

Can you briefly describe travelling activity right from your hotel/home till you reach your destination?

5

Can you please tell me how can we simplify your check-in process?

5

Once checked in, did you know your way to security check-in and to your gate?

5

How was sign and direction on airport to guide you to the direction you looking for?

5

Can you please tell me about your shopping & eating experience at the airport?

PERSONAS

Based on my imaginary interview, I came up with three user profile, environmental profile and task profile each and based on them. I created 3 personas to humanize the overall design process. I tried to cover all the age group, demography and travelling experience to carry out various activities at the airport in their own ways.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

Currently user are using airport website, airport application, enquiring at information desk,
Signs inside the airport, Google Maps or ask people around.

User flow of competitors

A user flow helps us get a better understanding of the steps a user takes through aplication. showing a very simplified version for illustrative purposes and could have better user flow. The information were overload.

Area of succeeding and failing

This way I could steer clear from repeating their mistakes to improve the chances of success with designing application

02. DISCOVER AND RESEARCH

After my research and gap analysis in the competitive segment, I’ve come up with a set of design principles while designing, which will maintain the relationship between the research and the UI design.

Take away

An WOW airport experience can be achieved by

- Delivering truly useful information is organized in a way that is easy for users to find

- Designing contents in a user flow format that doesn’t overwhelm but guides users

- Beautiful graphics and fun interactions can engage users and keep them exploring

- Customized experiences through beautiful journey planning

Conclusion

My research and assumptions are based on my personal experience and data from couple of airport applications , which I gathered from research. I believe with In-depth analysis and additional research, we could refine and customize the solution. Current case study is limited to focus on providing high level solution and highlight capabilities that could help user enjoy the airport experience.
